The Bulgarian yogurt starter works with any kind of milk – cow’s, sheep’s, goat’s, skimmed, whole, raw, pasteurized and non-dairy. It even works with vegan substitutes!
Traditional Bulgarian yoghurt is made from cow’s milk, but you can use the starter with any other milk. It even works with vegan substitutes like almond, cashew, coconut, soya milk etc. The choice of flavor combinations is almost endless. Make a yogurt for every taste and dietary preference.
Note: Of course the fat content, thickness and taste will vary depending on the milk you are using.

*Important: The starter itself contains lactose, but the final product (the yogurt you eat) is completely lactose free. During incubation all the milk powder from the starter is completely consumed by the growing bacteria. Moreover, the bacteria “eat” the lactose from the milk to make the yoghurt completely lactose free.

Storage & Usage
Usage
Packs are for single use, but can be split for multiple uses (except the Sourdough starter, which must be used all at once). It’s fine to defrost and refreeze the starter packs, even multiple times.
Caution: When splitting the pack, use what you need for your yogurt, then reseal and refreeze the rest. Store pouches to keep out moisture, like in a Ziploc bag or wrapped with a rubber band.
Storage
- Store the Bulgarian yogurt starter packs in the fridge or freezer.
- Keep away from moisture, heat or direct sunlight.
- Use by the date indicated on the label.
- The starter packs have 2 years of shelf live. Use by the date indicated on the label.
Shipping packs at ambient temperatures, even in warm climates, won’t harm the live cultures. Our freeze-dried process keeps the bacteria alive, even on the long hot trips to your doorstep.
